โ€œThe validation score told us our first idea wasn't going to work. Painful but saved us $40K in development. Pivoted, re-tested, and found product-market fit.โ€

The Challenge

Marcus had been a digital nomad for three years and noticed recurring pain points in the remote work space. He had three ideas:

1. A co-living marketplace for remote workers 2. An on-demand hot desk booking app 3. A co-working space finder optimized for digital nomads

The problem: he couldn't afford to build all three. As a solo, non-technical founder, each MVP would cost $15-20K to outsource. Picking the wrong one meant burning through his savings with nothing to show for it.

The Solution

Marcus used GetLaunchDay to run sequential validation sprints โ€” one idea every two weeks:

Sprint 1: Co-living marketplace. Created a landing page with the AI builder, drove traffic from Nomad List and digital nomad Facebook groups. After 500 visitors: 12 signups. Validation Score: 22. Verdict: kill.

Sprint 2: Hot desk booking app. New landing page, different audience (freelancers in tier-1 cities). After 600 visitors: 28 signups. Validation Score: 38. Verdict: pivot the positioning.

Sprint 3: Co-working finder for digital nomads. Refined the messaging based on learnings from sprints 1 and 2. Targeted the same nomad communities but with sharper copy. After 450 visitors: 97 signups in the first week, growing to 800 in two weeks via the referral engine. Validation Score: 72. Verdict: build.

The Results

The third idea โ€” NookSpace as a co-working space finder โ€” validated strongly. The 72 Validation Score put it in the "strong demand" category, and the referral mechanics showed genuine word-of-mouth interest.

Marcus used the traction data to negotiate a reduced rate with a development agency (they were impressed by the validation rigor) and secured his first angel check ($50K) from an investor he met at a Nomad List meetup.

NookSpace is now in private beta with 2,100 registered users and a waitlist for 15 cities. Total money saved by not building two failed MVPs: approximately $40K.

โ€œIf I'd built my first idea, I'd be broke and frustrated right now. GetLaunchDay gave me permission to kill bad ideas fast and focus on the one that works.โ€
